Day 2 in Alaska!
Boat tour day! We started the morning slow and let everyone get some extra sleep before making breakfast of pancakes, bacon, and oatmeal. While we ate, I worked on editing photos from yesterday. We gradually got moving and ready to head out for the day.
We left around 10:45 a.m. to head into Seward for our boat tour. I get motion sickness fairly often in cars, so I was a little nervous about how the day was going to go. I took Dramamine for the first time once we got to the boathouse. We got checked in, loaded onto the boat around 11:30, and officially took off at noon. As soon as we got out of the dock area, we started seeing otters!
As we traveled farther along the coast, we saw humpback whales and sea lions. After that, we crossed open water to the other side of the bay. The water was extremely rough, with 10-foot swells that the boat slammed through. Somehow, I did not get sick. Three people in our group of nine did, though, so I was very happy not to be one of them. Once we made it across, we followed the coastline through another bay before eventually heading back toward Seward.
In the second bay, we got close to a glacier, touched glacier ice, spotted a black bear in the distance, and saw even more mountain goats before crossing more rough water again.
When we made it back to Seward, the boat crew was nice enough to do interviews with us about what it’s like giving tours and what they enjoy about it. After that, we looked around the gift shop before heading back to the Airbnb. Once we got back, everyone started uploading photos, editing, and talking through the images from the day. We made spaghetti for dinner and stayed up editing for quite a while. The sun stayed out until almost 11 p.m., which makes everything feel strange, it’s weird to be exhausted and ready for bed at 10 p.m. while it’s still completely bright outside.
